Teaching Baguazhang to
Master Rick Pickens
Grand Master John Ng

Master Rick Pickens met and began training under Dr. John WingLok Ng (a Hui
descendant) in 1979. The Hui people were well known in China for their fierceness in
combat. It was known that one Hui in an army could turn the battle. Dr. Ng was also
a member of a secret society known as the "Shadow People".

Master Pickens became an inner closed door disciple of Dr. Ng, having been accepted
into Dr. Ng's family. The training under Dr. Ng was harsh and brutal with much
outdoor training in all kinds of weather conditions. Master Pickens specialized in his
teacher's brand of Linear Baguazhang. Master Pickens is 4th generation from Cheng
Rhong Chow in Bagua. He also learned his teacher's unique yet practical knife
fighting combat along with the skills of the Shadow People. His speciality is the
Vibration Palm which is still considered a legend among many martial artist. Master
Picken's wrote what is still considered one of the best articles ever written on the
subject of Vibration Palm. He learned application with several weapons and animal
styles.
Before and during his training under Dr. Ng, he studied many different styles of
combat. He studied Moo Duk Kwon under Sensei Perry Matthews (a student of
Master Jerry Jones of Cookville, TN); The Shaolin arts under Master Robert Green (a
student of Sin Kwang The of Lexington, KY); Judo from Master Price Jacobs (Eastern
KY University's Judo Couch, KY); Chinese Kempo from Master John Dufresne
(Lexington, KY); Wrestling from Wayne Pickens (an assistant wrestling coach at
Garfield College of Akron, OH); Southern Mantis and Wing Tsun under Arthur Lau
(A friend of Dr. Ng's and a practioner/specialist under Grandmaster Leung Ting).
Master Pickens stands 4th generation under Great Grandmaster Yip Man.

He later studied Knife Fighting combat under Eddie Coe Junior (a hand-to-hand
combat instructor for the New Hampshire Police Academy) who also served two
terms in the Vietnam War as a Ranger; and Jim Evans (a specialist/instructor of the
US Ranger School) who also was in the Angola Conflict as well as specialized detail
in South America. Both of these men had seen much action with a knife under
battlefield conditions and their knowledge was invaluable.

Master Pickens was an assistant weapons instructor at the Police Academy in
Richmond KY in 1980-81. He has had several articles published in National
Magazines as well as being a published author with two books under his belt. He
appeared in the National Enquirer and is listed in Who's Who of American Martial
Arts. His expertise and skills have been taught to several Law Enforcement, Security
Guards, Military, and Special Operation's personal. Details concerning some of this
is Classified and can not be discussed.

Other than a very few closed door students he has only trained professionals since
1986 and has not taught publicly, nor has he charged for his services. He became a
servant of GOD in 1993 and ministers to people wherever he can. After being
disabled from a motor vehicle accident, he has now retired. His teachings, however,
live on in the people that he has helped.
